PancakeSwap enthusiasts and CAKE Holders, it's a pleasure to have you here once again for a fresh installment of Interviews in the Kitchen! Today, we're thrilled to introduce you to a bunny who holds a special place in the heart of the PancakeSwap community - none other than Chef Mochi, our Head Chef.

Mochi's expertise and creative flair have been pivotal in shaping the delectable landscape of our beloved platform. Beyond his amazing ability to flip pancakes, Mochi has assumed a crucial role in not just orchestrating the platform's evolution but also infusing a captivating and delightful twist that has entranced the entire DeFi realm - a passion for crypto perfection!

I’m Chef Fran, Community Manager at PancakeSwap, and I will be the guide today in this diving expedition into Mochi’s mind. 

#### **Introduction and Background:**

**Chef Fran🧉: Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you became involved with PancakeSwap?**

**Chef Mochi🐰:** I came from the traditional finance industry. My first contact with crypto was in 2018, when a friend of mine worked on an early DeFi project that just did an ICO. At that point, I was wondering why anybody would need to do finance on a blockchain. 5 years later, after repeated exposure to Bitcoin, Ethereum and then a lot of self-exploration in crypto, now I’m building a DeFi project with full faith that DeFi will replace a significant section of traditional finance. Funny how life goes sometimes.

#### **Big Bunny responsabilities:**

**Chef Fran🧉: Being a Head Chef at PancakeSwap sounds both exciting and terrifying. How do you handle the pressure?**

**Chef Mochi🐰:** It has been a very exciting journey so far and it is such an honor to lead this talented Kitchen team and to be breaking fresh ground every day. Personally, I have a vision for PancakeSwap to be serving hundreds of millions of users eventually, and that long-term vision keeps me motivated and confident in building PancakeSwap everyday. On a day-to-day basis, I’m very energized working with the different Chefs that give me new perspectives and teach me something new every day.

Of course, taking the lead position comes with a matching amount of stress. In every major decision, I am conscious that we are trusted by a lot of users to take the greatest care of their assets on our platform, while simultaneously we are expected to make the correct decisions to grow and expand PancakeSwap in places where we haven’t been before. Along the way, there have already been many difficult decisions to make (e.g. tokenomics v2.5, launching a full-fledged game for the first time, growing a DEX in a multichain world), and I know there will be more to come. Whenever high pressure situations occur, I always go back to first principles of what works and doesn’t, thinking long-term over short-term, reading community feedback and talking with community members and ambassadors. I fully trust that if I take care of the community and make the correct long-term decisions for the protocol, we will thrive together as a community. 

Also, I am keenly aware that PancakeSwap is a big protocol, and the results of each thing we do today do not show up instantly tomorrow. Some projects, even when successful, are not really instantly visible to a protocol of PancakeSwap’s size. I try to roll with the punches when things are not going as well as expected, and guide the Kitchen in seeding many opportunities to give the protocol the best shot. 

tldr - handling pressure for me is sticking with first principles, trying to make good decisions, seeding many opportunities to make a few bigger successes and when some of them fail, don’t cry about it and just carry on.

**Chef Fran🧉 What do you like most about being a Chef in the PancakeSwap kitchen?**

**Chef Mochi🐰:** While I was a product manager, I used to like looking at other chains and taking ideas from different products and trying to build them within PancakeSwap. Now that I am no longer able to do product work on a day-to-day basis, I derive a lot of joy enabling fellow Chefs the freedom to express what they want to create in PancakeSwap and seeing those projects come to life. As some of you have noticed, the Kitchen is pumping out new initiatives and products at a very rapid rate. Many of these align with the personal interests and skills of the Chefs behind them, and I’m glad to be able to help them realize their interests in a way that grows PancakeSwap.

#### **Vision:**

**Chef Fran🧉: DeFi can be a complex and rapidly changing space. How do you ensure the PancakeSwap platform remains user-friendly and accessible to newcomers and experienced users?**

**Chef Mochi🐰:** On a high level, I look to the web2 world for principles on user-friendliness and accessibility. PancakeSwap’s larger goal is to convert web2 users to PancakeSwap, as we recognize that crypto is still a niche industry. As a novel way of doing finance, PancakeSwap must provide a much better experience than what traditional finance or fintech provides, or else, why will the average person use PancakeSwap? Decentralization and self-custody are beautiful strengths we have, but these alone will not convert the next wave of users when PancakeSwap tries to go mainstream.

The Product Managers and myself always think about what the least-technical user will think about our platform. If they can’t quickly learn to use it, then we need to make it simpler. 

**Chef Fran🧉 We have seen tremendous growth in terms of new chains at PancakeSwap. How much of your imprint is in this change? Do you think the future in the ecosystem is multichain?**

**Chef Mochi🐰:** I’m responsible for the decision on the direction of the new chains we go on, but the multichain view is shared by many Chefs in the Kitchen. I can’t see how our current state of bridging tokens around different chains, switching chains and approving transactions every single time will be the future of crypto. While I am personally familiar with all these actions, the UX is unacceptable for mass adoption. 

I believe the endstate of the future is one where crypto feels like the internet. Nobody asks what the tech behind the internet is, we just use the internet by typing some words on a keyboard or tapping some buttons on a screen. With crypto, the blockchain must eventually feel invisible, nobody should know or care what a network is and all multichain transactions must happen in the background. I don’t know how long it will take to get there, but PancakeSwap is going to iterate and try to achieve this level of UX.

#### **Fighting against inflation**

**Chef Fran🧉 Let's talk about emissions and inflation. When the project was born, I remember seeing that 40 tokens were created per block. Much water has gone under the bridge; today, our emission is not even a tenth of that. What can you tell me about how far we have come and how far we still have to go?**

**Chef Mochi🐰:**
For the first time in PancakeSwap’s long history of being inflationary, we have reached the point where the total supply of CAKE tokens in the market is effectively stable (i.e. net-neutral inflation). That’s a significant achievement, given that inflation when we first launched years ago was so high that we were doubling our supply every few months. 

While that’s nice, I’m not really the type of person to celebrate small achievements. I want to see CAKE go deflationary this year (and by my standards, that’s at least 2 months of deflation before I’ll consider this condition met). To ensure that, all the chefs and myself are working on different projects to increase the tools we have to achieve deflation by this year. Don’t go to the Q3 roadmap to find out what that might be, we didn’t publish all of those! 

On timeline, I have a reasonable degree of confidence that we’ll be deflationary before the end of the year. At this point, I’m thinking about how far we can push deflation and what that might look like in various scenarios next year.  

#### **Fun, Facts and Future**

**Chef Fran🧉: You have actively participated in discussions, podcasts, and events. In your opinion, does this help bring PancakeSwap to the attention of existing and potential new users**

**Chef Mochi🐰:** Each discussion, podcast and events I attend helps in a little way to bring PancakeSwap to new users. I know from conversations with industry contacts and friends that PancakeSwap is still viewed as a BNB Chain DEX. In fact, some are surprised to find out that PancakeSwap is multichain. Therefore, I will go to as many events as I can to spread the message. In this way, we can find more partners to work with as well.

**Chef Fran🧉 Surely you need some distraction after long working hours on the lead. How do you spend your free time when you're not busy with tasks?**

**Chef Mochi🐰:** Recently, I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to play some games as part of work. 😉 

**Chef Fran🧉 Before closing, what can you tell us about what the future holds for PancakeSwap?**

**Chef Mochi🐰:** The future is simple.

Interviews in the Kitchen - Chef Mochi and his Recipe for PancakeSwap's Success

To celebrate the [**launch of Perpetuals v2 on Arbitrum**](https://blog.pancakeswap.finance/articles/pancake-swap-launches-perpetuals-v2-on-arbitrum-offering-the-lowest-trading-fees-in-the-arbitrum-ecosystem), we are thrilled to unveil the most rewarding Perpetuals Trading Reward Program to be found on Arbitrum yet. Designed to provide perpetual v2 traders the opportunity to earn massive rewards, 25% of the platform trading fees will be distributed to top traders! 

There will be a series of captivating weekly epochs under the Trading Reward Program, and the 1st Epoch is now live. Don’t miss this opportunity to win epic rewards weekly along with the lowest trading fees (0.05% for the first month) on Arbitrum.

**Reward Amount**: 25% of the platform fees (in USDC) will go towards the prize pool to be distributed to traders with a tier placement. This means, for example, $100,000 would be up for grabs every week assuming a weekly trading volume of $500M (a conservative estimation given high perp activity on Arbitrum). The maximum cap on rewards per user is 20% of the rewards reserved for the program.

We are excited to reveal the launch of our highly anticipated Revenue Sharing Pool. This groundbreaking utility allows [**Fixed-Term CAKE stakers**](https://docs.pancakeswap.finance/products/syrup-pool/new-cake-pool/fixed-term-staking) to benefit from the growth and success of PancakeSwap directly. While DEXs generates revenues from trading fees, PancakeSwap stands apart by distributing a portion of our revenues back to Fixed-Term CAKE stakers weekly, thus allowing our community to participate directly and share in our protocol's growth and success. To express our appreciation to our loyal Fixed-Term CAKE stakers, we will include the v3 trading volume from June 2023 onwards as part of the revenue sharing pool distribution.

By staking your CAKE in our [**CAKE pool**](https://pancakeswap.finance/pools), you already enjoy APR. However, with the introduction of the Revenue Sharing Pool, your Fixed-Term CAKE rewards will be amplified even further. In addition to the APR, you will now directly earn real yield from the trading fee revenues generated by PancakeSwaps v3 trading pairs. Specifically, fixed-term CAKE stakers will receive 5% of the trading fee revenues from ALL PancakeSwap v3 pairs with 0.01% and 0.05% fee tiers on a recurring and weekly basis. This means your CAKE rewards and benefits will increase, creating a new opportunity for existing and new Fixed-Term CAKE stakers. With these two fee tiers accounting for a substantial **80-90% of PancakeSwap v3 volumes**, Fixed-Term CAKE stakers can expect rewards regularly.

## **How Do I Join the Revenue Sharing Pool?**

**Existing CAKE stakers** with fixed-term positions can update their staking positions by following the guidelines. A pop-up will guide you through the necessary steps to join the revenue sharing program.

## **How Do I Claim My Rewards?** 

Claiming your rewards is effortless through our user-friendly interface on PancakeSwap - simply click **“Claim” in the Locked CAKE Benefits pop-up**. Your revenue sharing rewards are calculated based on your shares of rCAKE. For more information on how rCAKE is calculated, visit [**here**](https://docs.pancakeswap.finance/products/revenue-sharing) for more details. Please note: rewards can be claimed even after multiple injections if users wish to save on gas.

## **When Are Rewards Distributed?** 

Rewards will be distributed weekly (7d) on approximately **Wednesday at 23:59 UTC**, starting with the first distribution on **August 9th, 2023**. Revenue sharing rewards accumulations will begin once a user passes the weekly checkpoint at 23:59 UTC every Wednesday and users receive their distributions once a full calendar week has passed. Please note: to be able to claim rewards with the first distribution period of August 9, users must join before August 2. Users who join after August 2 and before August 9 will be able to claim their rewards with the second distribution period on August 16. Users who join after August 9 and before August 16 will be able to claim their rewards with the third distribution period on August 23, and so on. 

## **How Are the Shares (rCAKE) Calculated?** 

At each week’s distribution, each user's share will be re-calculated based on: i) the amount of their locked CAKE ii) the remaining lock duration of their locked CAKE rounded down to weeks, and the maximum allowed lock time (52 weeks). For example, if a user has 50 CAKE locked and the remaining lock time is 10.3 weeks, then the user has 50 * (10 / 52 ) ~= 9.61 shares. 

Therefore, to stay eligible and keep receiving shares, you must maintain a minimum 7 days in remaining lock time at each weeks’ distribution time (23:59 UTC, Wednesday). 

The more CAKE you staked and/or the longer you have in the remaining locked duration. The bigger the share you have for each of the distributions.

## **Revenue Sharing Bonus from June and July 2023**

To celebrate the launch of the revenue sharing pool, during the first month of the launch in August, the kitchen will inject extra rewards from the revenue accumulated during June and July this year. Therefore, the first 4 distributions will each receive 25% of the revenue sharing rewards from June and July.
Be sure to join before 23:59 UTC, 2nd Aug to enjoy the limited time, boosted reward in August.

We would like to offer a recap for those who couldn't join us for the live Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Twitter Spaces, which took place on July 12th.

Our Chefs thoroughly reviewed the latest releases, shared valuable insights regarding the roadmap for the third quarter, and took the time to address inquiries from our beloved community.🤝

### Opening Words

**Chef Mochi🧑**: Hi everyone, good to see you all again. 

The Kitchen and PancakeSwap were buzzing in Q2. We started with the launch of PCS v3, which along with our v2, continues to help us be the leading DEX on the BNB Chain. Also, on Ethereum, PancakeSwap is a top 10, sometimes top 7 DEX by trading volume. Alongside our DEX, we've pushed out many upgrades and new products. 

The first iteration of bCAKE for v3 allows you to earn boosted CAKE emissions for CAKE pairs if you stake CAKE on PCS, bringing additional utility to CAKE stakers. We launched a few Ethereum Syrup Pools, a first in PancakeSwap history. We launched Liquid Staking for ETH on both BNB Chain and Ethereum, allowing our community to earn ETH staking rewards. Our very popular Pancake Protectors was also launched in May and now has 20k daily active players. Lastly, we deployed on Linea Testnet and Polygon zkEVM mainnet. We even managed to help users buy crypto directly via credit cards and tokens like ARB and OP on BNB Chain. Even by PCS's development standards, Q2 was an outstanding quarter, as we expanded in many different areas.

With the ambitious roadmap, we still have some things we are almost completing from our Q2 to-do list. They are the revenue-sharing contracts from our tokenomics vote and the Simple Staking integration, where you can earn by depositing just one token. We are still looking for a quality Ethereum-based project to do an IFO with. I'm excited about what's coming ahead in Q3.



### Pre-Collected Questions

**Q1. Chef Fran 🧉:  When is revenue sharing expected to begin for holders who have staked long term? What changes with revenue share being a pool?**

**A. Chef Bun 🐰:** It is coming very, very soon. We are now in the final testing and security auditing phase. Which could take some time, but it will be worth the wait. Once the product is announced and the pool is deployed, existing locked staking users can join on day 1. At the same time, new users can also participate by starting locking CAKE. More news about the mechanisms will be shared closer to the launch date.

I'm unsure if I'm getting it correctly for the second part of the question. I assume the question is "will the distributions of the trading fee income change once we have the revenue sharing pool in place?" And the answer will be "no" 

The trading fee distributions will remain the same for liquidity providers as well as the CAKE burn. The kitchen will use the budget from the protocol part of the trading fee income.

**Q2. Chef Fran 🧉: Why were there no Ethereum IFOs last quarter? They were part of the Q2 roadmap. Do you still have plans to do IFOs on Ethereum?**

**A. Chef Mochi🧑:** Looking at the fundraising situation on established chains, such as Ethereum, not many projects were of the quality we expect from IFOs.

Where possible, we will continue to pursue IFOs. In terms of Private Sales, we will look towards implementing them on other chains too, though given the cross-chain messaging required, the technical requirements may take some time to sort out. 

The chefs are working hard to bring IFOs to the community!

**Q3. Chef Fran 🧉:** In the last quarter, why didn’t PancakeSwap complete all the promised items as per the roadmap? What’s your general approach for delivering the roadmap items? Does your priority change mid-way to focus more on other things?

**A. Chef Mochi 🧑:** We generally try to finish everything in the roadmap as we have already decided that these are important items. However, planning for everything to be released exactly as described in each quarterly roadmap is difficult. Several things may affect the Kitchen's preferred timeline, and we keep the roadmap somewhat flexible to maximize community benefits or developments beyond the current quarter. Two examples of things that affect timelines are:

-Reliance on 3rd parties. This is mostly outside the Kitchen's control since we cannot force our partners to work to our roadmap. For this same reason, we have items we work on that are not on the roadmap if we have yet to determine when they will move forward in a timely manner.

-Efficiencies from changing timelines: Certain opportunities may arise where it is more efficient/beneficial to change priorities temporarily. For example, we deployed on Linea Testnet and Polygon zkEVM Mainnet even though we indicated only one chain deployment for Q2. Linea's Testnet allowed users to participate in the Linea Voyage Testnet quest, where users can receive an NFT from Linea for participating in the quest. This was timebound by the duration of the Linea Voyage quest. 

We seek the community's understanding that the roadmap is a general guide, and we try as best to complete everything within the indicated time. Still, various factors will affect timelines. This has been the case for previous roadmaps and future roadmaps.

**Q4. Chef Fran 🧉: The gauge system will be huge and attract much utility to CAKE. Have you already designed the system and how it will interact with the farm, bCAKE, and Farm Auctions**

**Chef Bun🐰:** Yes, indeed. We have been internally thinking and designing a gauges system for PancakeSwap. Even back in early 2022. But now, it is the right time to bring it to the table. Combined with our multichain expansion plan, we are excited to see all the new developments and opportunities it will bring to the PancakeSwap tokenomics. 

We can't reveal too much detail at the moment. Still, it will be one of the essential parts in the CAKE tokenomics to help shape the future of PancakeSwap. It may start small, but eventually, it will expand and become more involved regardless of the products or, better, regardless of the blockchains.

**Q5. Chef Fran 🧉:  Does the upcoming vCake Gauge Design show previous completed votes?**

**A. Chef Bun 🐰:** The new gauge system is not designed to completely replace the Snapshot voting we have been using. It will be more of an addition as community governance in PancakeSwap extends far beyond the scope of CAKE emissions. But the fact is, in both systems, the more CAKE you lock, the more voting power you will have. And the benefits are shared across them seamlessly.

While the new gauge system allows CAKE holders to be more involved in shaping the distribution of rewards and emissions in the PancakeSwap ecosystem, it also incentivizes users to acquire and lock CAKE.

We believe this hybrid system will work the best considering our suite of products and our community.

**Q6. 🧉:   What are the Multichain plans in 2023?**

**A. Chef Mochi🧑:** PancakeSwap strongly believes in the multichain future, and many rollups are working toward this vision. While they are early in terms of development now, they present an opportunity for PancakeSwap to join and grow with them before the main ecosystem DeFi players are set. By being on these chains early, PancakeSwap also allows our users to participate in them early and for the community to benefit from their growth alongside us.

This quarter will be one where PancakeSwap joins promising L2s to grow our reach to all DeFi users. Please follow us on Twitter, TG, and Discord to see where we're heading next.

**Q7. 🧉: When can we expect a change in the CAKE hard cap? Or is it going to remain the same as now?**

**A. Chef Mochi🧑:** Thanks for the question - please refer to my Twitter account, where I discuss this in detail. In short, the Kitchen knows that CAKE emission has started to taper off quickly, and the total CAKE supply will likely remain around 400m in the medium term. However, because more chain deployments are coming up, we are waiting to see what emissions we will need on those chains before we decide to lower the 750m hard cap.

**Q8. 🧉:  Do you have any plans to launch pancakeswap own hardware wallet or own app?**

**A. Chef Mochi🧑:**  An app is an idea that is interesting. We will think about it!

**Q9. 🧉: What is universal router? Would it be something similar to the DEX aggregators that exist on the market? Would we use liquidity from other DEXs? What value would this add to PancakeSwap?**

**A. Chef Mochi🧑:** The universal router combines ERC20 tokens and NFT swapping into a single swap router. This gives users maximum flexibility in performing token swaps across different liquidity pools on PancakeSwap. Universal Router is unlike DEX aggregators as it only taps into PancakeSwap's liquidity pools. 

The key technology that will add value to PancakeSwap and its users will be Permit2. Combined with Universal Router, Permit2 allows users to safely share and manage approvals across different smart contracts with our partners. All transactions are encoded using a string of commands, which enables users to batch approve multiple tokens and execute multiple transfers with just one transaction. We intend to roll Permit2 and Universal Router out on all chains.

**Q10. 🧉: Uniswap V4 brings things that already had in Balancer V2, Including dynamic fees and also all pools are under a single contract. Uni v4 also brings hooks and Balancer does something cool like depositing some liquidity of liquidity pools into lending protocols. So where are chefs looking in research for more long-term improvements to AMM?**

**A. Chef Mochi🧑:** We think the biggest issue is improving organic LP returns to counter impermanent loss. I will let Momo touch on this later. 

**Q11. 🧉: What is dynamic fee in the roadmap? How does it work ? How will it be handled? With volatility, volume, or time?**

**Chef Momo 🐇:**

Dynamic fee is a variable fee component charged to Traders / Arbitrageurs to help mitigate IL for the LPs. We will release the exact working mechanism post-deployment. On a high-level, it penalizes arbitrage trades leading to more price divergence and higher IL for LPs.

Dynamic fee will be charged on tokenOut, i.e., it retains more valuable assets in the pool. 

With volatility, volume, or time?

While building our model, we have looked at several existing volatility-based models. These models relied on: Backward-looking volatility estimation: Various factors, such as economic shifts and regulatory changes can alter volatility, retrospective approach is a lagging indicator. Reliance on several factors for estimation: runs the risk of overfitting that can result in inaccurate predictions for unseen data 

Our model doesn’t rely on multiple external factors or tries to predict volatility. It benefits from the inherent trading behavior of arbitrageurs in different market regimes. Thus, it automatically adapts to changing volatility/market conditions.

We have done extensive backtests and have seen a 1.2x (low volatility) to 1.8x (high volatility) increment in fees collected by LPs during different volatility periods helping in significant IL recovery.

**Q12. 🧉: Would you consider launching insurance on assets staked on your platform?**

**A. Chef Mochi🧑:** Not in the short-term. We find that insurance on DeFi assets has not always worked very well on other platforms, and PancakeSwap doesn't have core competitiveness in assessing the risk/reward analysis of black swan events in DeFi/crypto in general. We try our best so that none of our protocol's products have any risks, but we don't know how to quantify and monetize those risks.

**Q13. 🧉: What does Simple Staking mean? Will we have added liquidity with single tokens instead of a pair?**

**Chef Gyoza🥞:** Simple staking is a product that offers single-sided staking in partnership with Binance Earn. Users can stake several tokens for a locked period of days to earn APR. PancakeSwap users who are CAKE holders + stakers will be able to get an extra APR boost.

**Q1. Goldchain: On the Q3 roadmap is listed that we will get a v3 Position Manager.
Are there any details we can already know about?**

**A. Chef Bun 🐰:** We have an exciting marketplace-like system coming soon. It will allow you to access, evaluate, and participate in various V3 position managers and liquidity automation providers, all within the PancakeSwap interface. You won't need to leave the platform.

We're currently working on developing our in-house strategies for the PancakeSwap community. These will have unique tweaks and clever designs specifically tailored.

Additionally, we have been actively collaborating and aligning with many industry-leading partners. We are in the process of onboarding them, and you can expect to hear news about these partnerships very soon.


**Q2. Luxury Rich: Concerning the revenue sharing, is it going to be a permanent program or are there going to be any further future adjustments?**

**A. Chef Bun 🐰:** Once the deployment takes place, unless there are any major unexpected changes, we can consider it permanent. However, we prefer not to use that term. Any future adjustments will also involve community decisions. This program is designed to be long-term and dedicated to benefiting all CAKE lockstaking users. 

There will be adjustments, such as allocating a certain amount of monthly or weekly revenue from the treasury to locked staking users. Depending on market conditions and external factors, we may consider adjusting the ratio or amount in the future. But overall, the program itself is expected to be long-term.

**A. Chef Mochi🧑:** The concept of revenue sharing is based on the CAKE tokenomics decision proposal, where we collectively voted on the future direction of CAKE staking. We are committed to transitioning into a low inflation, net zero inflation, and eventually a net deflationary phase as the vote has closed. 

The revenue sharing idea ties the CAKE token more directly to PancakeSwap's growth as a protocol. Therefore, what CAKE stakers receive is tied to the growth of PancakeSwap. This revenue sharing model is intended to be a long-term initiative that grows alongside the protocol. 

**Q3. Luxury Rich: Are there any plans for giving more utilities to PancakeSwap NFTs?**

**Chef Mochi🧑:** In the Pancake Protectors game, we introduced an experience where PancakeBunnies and PancakeSquad take center stage. They provide additional buffs and strategies to strengthen your heroes. 

We believe NFTs and games are a great fit, and while we focus on supporting the current game for the long term, we are open to exploring more ways to incorporate NFTs in social and gaming settings. Developing and supporting games requires careful consideration, and we are dedicated to improving the Pancake Protectors game with our partner, Mobox. While we have future plans, we don't have a specific timeline at this moment.
