Our native token, CAKE, is on a path to becoming a deflationary token with a reduced supply over time. This initiative is pivotal in ensuring a more sustainable future for PancakeSwap, and we want to highlight our progress in 2023 toward our deflationary dream.

**The Ultimate Goal: Ultrasound CAKE**

Ultrasound CAKE is more than a concept; it's our ambitious vision for a thriving ecosystem. Our primary aim is to gradually reduce CAKE's supply over time, thereby driving up demand and fostering stability in its value. By effectively combating inflation, we are charting a path toward sustainable growth that aligns with the best interests of our community.

**Deflationary Initiatives in 2023**

We've been hard at work implementing various initiatives to achieve Ultrasound CAKE, and here's an overview of our critical efforts: 

1. **CAKE Tokenomics v2.5:** Our community-approved **[proposal](https://pancakeswap.finance/voting/proposal/0x707643dd2c2b941c7274f26a0362922198912e8549050ae9f2d1d9d71ada04bb)** for CAKE Tokenomics v2.5 marks a significant milestone on our path to sustainability. Before v2.5, inflation rates posed long-term sustainability challenges for CAKE, necessitating reductions for the overall health of PancakeSwap. As a result, we decided to reduce CAKE syrup pool and Farm emissions. Following the successful vote, CAKE Syrup Pool emissions have been promptly scaled back to 3 CAKE per block and will continue to decrease to 0.35 CAKE per block (~2% APR) by the end of October. Additionally, we have implemented progressive Farm reductions, starting from the BNB Chain v2 to BNB Chain v3 migration, followed by subsequent weekly and fortnightly reductions. This has led to a rapid decrease in token minting from products, further solidifying CAKE's token supply stability.

2. **Token Burning:** Thanks to substantial trading volumes (12.8 billion from v3 as of writing) and the successful launch of products like Pancake Protectors, we have already burned an impressive **238 million CAKE** tokens since the start of 2023. Notably, CAKE burns are primarily driven by trading volume, and our v3 deployment on chains such as BNB Chain, Ethereum, Polygon zkEVM, and zkSync Era contributed significantly to the overall burn. We are optimistic that new chain launches will further increase the CAKE burn.

The weekly chart above illustrates our mint, burn, and net-mint volume. Since the proposal for CAKE Tokenomics v2.5 vote passed on April 28th, we have observed a significant positive trajectory, with net-mint volume consistently tracking at a low range compared to pre-vote weeks. This demonstrates our commitment and dedication to building toward Ultrasound Cake

3. **Revenue Sharing Pool:** We introduced Revenue Sharing Pool. Through this utility, Fixed-Term CAKE stakers can now directly share in the v3 trading fee revenue, giving them a real yield that amplifies Fixed-Term CAKE rewards and contributes significantly to our deflationary efforts. Instead of minting extra CAKE, we now share a portion of our trading fee revenues with our dedicated stakers, strengthening our commitment to deflation.

4. **Combating Inflation Rate:** As of 24 July 2023, our total CAKE supply stands at 390.2 million, while approximately three months ago, on May 1st, 2023, it was 390.1 million. Our inflation rate has remained nearly 0%, even with three more months of Syrup Pool reward reductions ahead.

This achievement can be attributed to several factors synergizing to curb inflationary pressures. Notably, our solid trading volumes, strategic Farm emission reductions, and successful product releases, like Pancake Protectors, have significantly contributed to higher CAKE burns. As a result, we have managed to keep inflation well below 5% per annum, surpassing expectations and laying a solid foundation for our journey towards Ultrasound CAKE.

5. **Lowering Max CAKE Supply:** Lowering the max CAKE supply will be appropriate sometime this year. However, as we are still expanding into multiple chains, we will consider this again once we have developed our product suite on other chains and secured a sustainable position.

Achieving Ultrasound CAKE: Our Deflationary Vision

PancakeSwap’s CAKE burn system is designed to help manage the total supply of CAKE by periodically burning (removing) a portion of the minted tokens. The goal is to burn more CAKE than minted, decreasing the token supply. This deflationary approach helps maintain a balanced supply, supporting the token’s long-term health and growth.

We understand that some users have questions about the recent changes to the burn format and how CAKE is managed. Let’s dive into these questions and give you a clearer picture of the key points so you can better understand how the CAKE burn system works and our updates.

## 1. How Does the New Burn Format (Introduced on March 24th, 2025) Work?

We switched to a **[simpler format](https://x.com/PancakeSwap/status/1904196792864125387)** to make it easier to understand the impact of burns on CAKE’s deflationary status. Previously, we reported large amounts of CAKE being burned each week (often over 9M CAKE), but this number only showed the total CAKE burned without factoring in the CAKE that was minted in the same week. As a result, it didn’t fully capture how much CAKE was actually being removed from circulation.

Now, we focus on Net Deflation as the key metric for CAKE’s tokenomics. This method provides a more accurate picture of how much CAKE is actually being reduced from the supply.

**Here’s how we calculate it:**

**Net CAKE Deflation =**
    CAKE Minted (Emitted) to products (like V2 pools, V3 pools, and Lottery)
    **Minus**
    CAKE Burned from products (like V2 pools, V3 pools, Lottery, Prediction, IFOs, and Perpetuals)
    
For example, our recent **[burn update](https://x.com/PancakeSwap/status/1904196792864125387)** reported a net deflation of -339k CAKE, effectively reducing CAKE’s current total supply by 339k, or -0.12%.

**Note:**

- The Ecosystem Growth Fund is excluded from this calculation until its tokens enter the market. Further details on this can be found in point (3) below.
- Products that generate fees and are processed monthly rather than weekly (e.g., Base pools, Ethereum pools, and IFO-related burns) will cause a sharp increase near the beginning or end of a month as these burns are accounted for

## 2. Burn Numbers from Week to Week

It’s not uncommon to see some variations between the burn numbers we reported and what is shown on platforms like **[Dune](https://dune.com/pancakeswap/PancakeSwap-CAKE-Tokenomics)**. This can happen because the amount of CAKE minted each week depends on when the trigger transactions are executed.

For example, CAKE burns take place regularly on Mondays, but since CAKE is minted at a rate of 40 CAKE per block, the amount of CAKE accumulated and sent for minting and burning can vary slightly depending on when the transaction is triggered.

If you look at the **[Dune Tokenomics chart](https://dune.com/pancakeswap/PancakeSwap-CAKE-Tokenomics),** you may notice an unusually large net_mint of -3.8M CAKE for the week of March 10th. While this figure is accurate on-chain, about 3M CAKE will be offset when the accumulated CAKE is minted to the **[Ecosystem Growth Fund](https://bscscan.com/address/0x91b3927f100Bb6c19E5434bFaBa07D60670b98D6)** during the next burn. As a result, the true net burn for the week of March 10th was around 800K CAKE.

To clarify, when the next burn occurs on Monday, March 31st, the total and circulating supply numbers on Dune will show an increase. However, this doesn’t represent an “additional mint.” **The only aspect the team can control is the burn — the minting process is governed by the blockchain and the timing of the transactions.**

### 3. Ecosystem Growth Fund

The Ecosystem Growth Fund is not included in the net deflation calculation until its tokens are actually released into the market. This approach helps focus on the tokens that are actively being minted or burned in circulation, giving a clearer picture of CAKE’s real deflationary impact. Including tokens that haven’t entered the market yet could lead to confusion about how much CAKE is actually being reduced from supply.

Currently, the **[Ecosystem Growth Fund](https://bscscan.com/address/0x91b3927f100Bb6c19E5434bFaBa07D60670b98D6)** holds 830,625 CAKE, with a total of about 3.8M CAKE accumulated, 3M of which is stored in the MasterChef contract. The primary purpose of this fund is to support farm emissions, but most of this CAKE hasn’t been used yet. **Since 2024, less than 1% of the accumulated CAKE has been put to use, while 99% remains idle and hasn’t entered the market.** Including the full 3.8M CAKE in the calculation would overstate the amount of CAKE actually circulating.

As the fund’s CAKE may be used or burned in the future, excluding it from the current calculation reflects what is actively impacting the circulating supply. When these tokens actually enter the market, they will be considered in the supply, and their use will continue to align with the deflationary goal.

### **Future Improvements in Burn Reporting and Transparency**

To enhance transparency and provide users with a clearer view of the burn process, PancakeSwap will be taking the following steps:

- **Open-source Burn Dashboard**: We will be developing a dashboard where users can track all emissions and burns, along with their corresponding on-chain transaction hashes. This will allow users to verify the data easily and better understand the changes to CAKE's supply.
- **Simplified CAKE Tokenomics Documentation**: We will be revising the CAKE tokenomics documentation to provide clearer explanations and make it more user-friendly. The updated documentation will also include a list of all addresses involved in emitting or burning CAKE, offering users a transparent and accessible way to follow the process.

**A Step-by-Step Breakdown of How CAKE Minting and Burning Works**

To give you a clearer understanding of the entire process, here’s a simple breakdown of how CAKE is minted and burned:

**Minting**:

CAKE tokens are created through the **MasterChef contract**. Every block on the BNB Chain, **40 CAKE tokens** are minted. With **28,800 blocks per day**, CAKE is continuously minted throughout the day, but it doesn't happen all at once. Instead, the minted CAKE accumulates and is sent to the burn wallet when triggered.

**Burning**:

Every **Monday**, a portion of the minted CAKE is burned (permanently removed from circulation). Most of the tokens are burned directly, but a small portion is allocated toward rewards and ecosystem growth. The CAKE fees generated by PancakeSwap products (like farms, Lottery, etc.) are sent to a **[multisig wallet](https://bscscan.com/address/0xceba60280fb0ecd9a5a26a1552b90944770a4a0e)**, then transferred to a "burn address," which is permanently inaccessible, ensuring that the tokens are gone for good.

We’d like to take this opportunity to address some of the common questions you’ve raised, so please review the following explanations regarding this decision.

1\. **Why does PancakeSwap change its policies or conditions frequently?**
    
One of the main focus areas for the Kitchen has been CAKE's tokenomics. Since last year, the Kitchen has reduced emissions for farming rewards and redirected those funds to burning CAKE tokens, achieving a consistent annual deflation rate of 1-2%. This has only been achieved through an iterative model: making a change, reviewing the impact, and making further changes to accomplish the ultimate goal.
    
Further adjustments to the allocation of CAKE tokens aim to maintain trading volumes and utilize emissions more effectively, moving beyond traditional liquidity mining incentives to enhance overall ecosystem value.

2\. **Can you provide detailed information on how the redirected emissions will be used for ecosystem growth, and explain why a 10% emissions cut was chosen? Additionally, what metrics or examples illustrate the benefits of this decision?**

PancakeSwap v4 represents the largest update to our protocol in the past 1.5 years since the launch of v3. This update introduces new opportunities for developers by enabling them to create hooks that enhance platform functionality. These enhancements will improve the trading experience through features like dynamic fees and reduced gas costs, while also optimizing liquidity provision by maximizing returns and capital efficiency.

We anticipate that these improvements will boost trading volumes and increase CAKE burn, ultimately attracting more traders and enhancing protocol revenue and market depth, benefiting all participants. To support the launch of PancakeSwap v4, we are implementing two key initiatives: the Grant Program, which allocates $250,000 to fund innovative projects within our ecosystem, and the Emission Program, which involves strategically reallocating emissions to 0.05 CAKE per block.

The decision to implement a 10% emissions reduction is informed by the positive effects of previous reductions made mid-to-late last year and current APRs across all chain deployments and farms. Last year, we successfully reduced CAKE emissions without sacrificing trading volumes or market share. Given that it has been several months since the last reduction, we believe we can continue this trend, conserve CAKE emissions, and maintain our market presence.

3\. **Do we have other upcoming products that may also require emissions?**

Yes, we have several product updates and expansions that will require CAKE emissions. These include deploying to new chains, migrating liquidity from PancakeSwap v3 to v4, and increasing liquidity for meme coins, stablecoins, and core assets across all the chains where we are already active.

4\. **Can you clarify how the emissions from the Multichain Warchest have been utilized so far?**
    
Out of the 1.25 CAKE per block allocated for the Multichain Warchest, we have utilized the emissions in the following ways:

- **Burn Address**: We have **[directed 0.4 CAKE per block to the burn address](https://pancakeswap.finance/voting/proposal/0x45121903be7c520701d8d5536d2de29577367f2c84f39602026dc09ef1da8346)**. This strategic move is intended to help us achieve "ultrasound CAKE," a term referring to a deflationary token model in which the supply of CAKE decreases over time.
- **Unused Emissions**: Approximately 0.2 CAKE per block is currently unused. This comprises the majority of CAKE allocated to the Warchest and allows the Kitchen to respond to future needs or opportunities within our ecosystem.
- **Rewards for Liquidity Providers**: The remaining emissions are actively used to reward liquidity providers across several chains, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, ZKsync, Linea, Polygon zkEVM, opBNB, and Aptos. The Kitchen has been frugal in deploying incentives to grow marketshare and trading volumes, with relatively small portions of the Warchest used to incentivize liquidity providers on these platforms and grow our Total Value Locked (TVL) and trading volumes. This approach has positioned us as a competitive multichain decentralized exchange (DEX). 5\. **How do you address community concerns about potential decreases in CAKE earnings in the short to medium term, and what reassurances can you provide regarding the long-term value despite immediate reductions?**

The Kitchen has conducted a thorough review of all pools and farms across our chain deployments. This comprehensive assessment informed our decision to propose a reduction in incentives. We believe that PancakeSwap will maintain its trading volumes, market share, and, most importantly, competitive APRs for liquidity providers even after this proposal is implemented.

The alternative would be to overissue CAKE tokens to farms and pools that do not generate sufficient volumes to break even. Over the past year, we have successfully reduced CAKE emissions, making it a deflationary asset while simultaneously increasing our market share, expanding the number of supported assets, and adding more chains—all without negatively impacting our users or liquidity providers.

6\. **Why propose allocating funds to PancakeSwap growth instead of giving veCAKE holders the option to direct a portion of their voting power towards future CAKE growth through the gauge system?**

While the veCAKE system effectively aligns long-term community members and adds utility to CAKE, the voting behavior of veCAKE holders does not always align with the protocol's broader needs. Currently, many veCAKE holders tend to vote for options that offer the largest bribes to maximize their short-term returns. This focus on immediate gains can overshadow the long-term potential of new products and initiatives, which may not provide the same level of short-term rewards.

For instance, consider a scenario where we want to bootstrap a BNB-USDT v4 pool. Although this pool has a high probability of generating substantial trading volumes and CAKE burns for the ecosystem, rational veCAKE holders may choose not to vote for it if it lacks attractive bribes. Consequently, the pool may struggle to gain the necessary liquidity, undermining its potential benefits for all CAKE holders.

This is where the Ecosystem Growth Fund comes into play. By allocating dedicated funds to support initiatives like the BNB-USDT v4 pool, we can provide the necessary emissions to bootstrap liquidity and ensure its success. This approach allows us to focus on long-term growth and sustainability, rather than being solely driven by short-term incentives.

Ultimately, our strategy aims to create a more balanced ecosystem that not only rewards current participants but also fosters the development of new products that can drive greater value for all CAKE holders over time.

7\. **Will PancakeSwap utilize the community forum for discussions prior to formal proposals?**

Currently, a forum post is live **[here](https://forum.pancakeswap.finance/t/proposal-to-redirect-emissions-for-ecosystem-growth/796)**, where you can share your feedback and insights on the proposed changes. 8\. **Will PancakeSwap consider a smaller emissions cut in response to community feedback?**

If substantial feedback suggests that a smaller emissions cut would better serve PancakeSwap's interests and support the protocol's long-term health, we will carefully consider those perspectives.

However, based on a thorough review of APRs, volumes, and fees generated across the protocol, we believe a 10% reduction is the best option for long-term success. This reduction will be implemented gradually over several epochs to minimize impact and allow for assessment of pool performance.

9\. **What do you think about implementing temporary emissions cuts with a plan to restore them later, and how would this work?**

While this approach may seem appealing, accurately predicting how long we will need these emissions is challenging. The success of our new products and initiatives can vary significantly, making it difficult to determine the timeline for their traction and the incentives they will require.

In our previous **[proposal](https://pancakeswap.finance/voting/proposal/0x45121903be7c520701d8d5536d2de29577367f2c84f39602026dc09ef1da8346)**, we demonstrated our willingness to adjust allocations if they exceed what is necessary to meet the protocol's needs. 10\. **How does the Kitchen's request for discretion align with the program's overall goals and objectives, and what measures will be taken to ensure accountability during its implementation?**

This discretion is not just a matter of convenience; it is in the Kitchen's best interest to utilize the Ecosystem Growth funds effectively, as our actions directly impact the protocol's revenue and long-term viability. Initially, the emissions allocated to the Multichain Warchest were designated solely for PancakeSwap's deployments to new chains. However, our current strategy encompasses a broader range of initiatives.

In addition to supporting new chain expansions, we are now introducing products like PancakeSwap v4, which require incentives but do not neatly fit into the traditional "Multichain Warchest" category. By renaming it to "Ecosystem Growth," we aim to more accurately represent the fund's purpose and the diverse initiatives it will support.
